Print of the M. S. Kemmerer residence in Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania. Mahlon Sistie Kemmerer (August 27, 1843-Dec 1, 1868) was a prominent coal operator in Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania who became the director of the Alden Coal Company. Upon his death in 1925, he was one of the richest coal mine operators in the Philadelphia. He was also the founder of the Wyoming town bearing his name . William P. Mangold worked for the Kemmerers as a young boy and later worked for John L. Kemmerer in Short Hills.
The house was torn down shortly after the death of Gertrude Kemmerer Thornton, M.S. Kemmerer's daughter, in 1927.
Built in 1879, the 19-room mansion was done in the popular Swiss-Chalet style and lay within a five acre estate off Leigh Avenue. The estate also contained a Swiss chalet style carriage house.
The carriage house has been renovated and contains a library with materials relating to the family and the history of the area.Collection
