Nikki Giovanni Poem

Context

The work features a facsimile of an original, handwritten poem composed by Nikki Giovanni "for the children and young people at Atkinson Library"; the original poem is in the Milwaukee Public Library Archival Collection, Milwaukee Public Library Archives & Special Collections. The poem reads: I like to travel; I like hot buttered popcorn on a windy night; I especially like the sun rising through the leaves of my poinsettia tree; I like the way I feel when I meet someone new; I don’t like my cold feet and hands, but I do like to warm them against the spine of a book; I like books because they make me laugh and think and know that there is much much more to learn. I like to learn because I’m human. And learning is what we do best.
