A historic Palestinian town in the Hebron subdistrict, situated on level ground in the western foothills of the Hebron Mountains, south of Wadi Bayt Jibrin and at the intersection of roads connecting Hebron, Jerusalem, Ramla, and al-Faluja. Its agricultural landscape was centered on rain-fed cultivation of cereals and fruit, with extensive olive groves along the surrounding valleys and hills; in 1944/45, 30,613 dunums were devoted to cereals and 2,477 dunums to irrigated land and orchards, while the town also served as an important commercial and service center for the surrounding villages.Also Known As
