Place Description

A historic Palestinian city in the central highlands of Palestine, situated approximately 10 km south of Jerusalem on a limestone ridge overlooking the surrounding valleys and hills, with the Church of the Nativity forming the historic center of the city. The surrounding agricultural landscape has long been characterized by olive groves, vineyards, figs, almonds, and cereals, while Bethlehem also became known for traditional handicrafts, particularly olive-wood carving, mother-of-pearl work, stone carving, and textiles.
