A historic Palestinian coastal town in the southern coastal plain, situated between Gaza and Jaffa and near the ancient site of Asqalan. By the late Ottoman and British Mandate periods, al-Majdal was a major agricultural and commercial center, with extensive lands producing wheat and other cereals, citrus, bananas, grapes, olives, and vegetables, and with trade connecting the town to the surrounding villages and the wider southern Palestinian region. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, al-Majdal was known for its uniquely woven silk/cotton blend fabrics that catered to Palestinian dressmaking needs.Also Known As
