Khan Yunis (خان يونس)

Place Description

Khan Yunis (خان يونس) is a historic region in southern Gaza, situated along the coastal route between Gaza and Egypt. The area developed as a settled agricultural and market community around the Mamluk caravanserai established in the fourteenth century, while maintaining longstanding connections with surrounding Bedouin tribes and communities. During the Ottoman period, Bedouin groups including ʿArab al-Wahidat were among the inhabitants of Khan Younis, and the town served as a regional center for trade, agriculture, and exchange between settled and mobile communities. Its cultural landscape reflects the interconnected histories of village, urban, agricultural, and tribal communities of southern Palestine and the Sinai region.
