Sioux Feather War BonnetEntry/Object ID
NU 2024.116Description
A feather headdress or war bonnet tentatively identified as Očhéthi Šakówin (Sioux).
Transcribed from previous documentation:
"Turkey feathers trimmed w small red feathers at base and tip - also horse hair tips. quills at base of feathers wrapped w strings of mixed colored seed beads. Ribbons and fur strips hanging from each side. Needs beaded head band sewn to bonnet. Bonnet made on brown of a crown of a felt hat. Upper surface of felt hat is covered with small red and blue feathers."
Sol Levine's assessment transcribed from previous documentation:
"Backward slope of bonnet marks it as belonging to upper Plains Indians (also Turkey feathers). Some of the seed beads are faceted - green transparent, red, metallic.
Large red faceted beads are Hudson Bay trade beads, possibly Russian.
Large round metal beads (bronze) are trade beads and may be hawk bells.
The bonnet was used by 2 generations - sequence different sized beads."Collection
