Artist’s Intent Note

Note

This sculpture is a continuation of the artist’s A Shadow in the Depth of Light series which honors those driving the 2022 Woman Life Freedom protests in Iran stemming from the murder of Mahsa (Jina) Amini by the Iranian morality police. Demonstrators from all walks of life continue to advocate for the fundamental rights, freedoms, dignity, and equality of women despite the Iranian government’s response of brutal force, shootings, beatings, and arbitrary arrests. This particular varied-edition limited series, created exclusively for NUMU’s Director Circle program, was prompted by a tragic incident involving a young Iranian girl, Armita Geravand, who fell into a coma and subsequently passed away after being assaulted on the Tehran Metro, by the morality police on October 1, 2023, for not wearing the mandatory head covering. The 3D-printed hands included in this series bear the name of this one of many victims of the government crackdown, and honor those who have sacrificed immensely for their cause. Through this work, Honarmand not only commemorates these victims, raises awareness about the ongoing struggle for human rights, and underscores the importance of speaking out against injustice.
