Dear Barrie and Carol
What a charming letter of yours of November 22nd, which I found on my desk when I returned for Christmas from Germany.
I am thrilled about Carl's restored eye-sight. What a joy for him and for you and what a relief. I am equally thrilled about his hearing aids. I was delighted to read that he politely reminds you not to speak too loudly, this is really wonderful news!
The developments for your own property sound exciting. Perhaps when Diana and I are visiting my mother in February we can 'steal' (and 'steal' as you know, is the right word) some time to visit you in that wonderful location. By then, perhaps, the two feet of top soil mixed with manure will already have begun to germinate. I must send you the Diana rose, if you do not already have it.
I can read the Japanese influence in your life in the 10 tons of boulders, which were hand-picked and each weighing two to three tons. I cannot wait to see it.
Your visit to Kyoto and Muko-shi is the kind of visit I would like to make to Japan but never can. So it is through you that I know the village folk and those cultivate their extraordinary landscape and their trees.
I am sorry about Cathedral Oaks but hope that Carol's addition about the Saratoga Community Gardens and the Open Space people will soon restore it to what it was when you and Carol lived there.
Marrianne Swann sounds as if she could, with Carol's help, take over the job of writing the history of Cathedral Oaks. If she has the fervour and Carol has the inclination {inscription} (I know she has) the critical sense and the ability of an editor, it will be a marvellous book.
Thanks for your words about my father's letters.
What can we do about our uncooperative neighbour, Duncan? As you must realise, this is the kindest thing I can say about him. Is he not obligated by law to allow Cathedral Oaks to share in his water and can he really legally refuse to have the water turned on? Is there anything I can do to get some useful result- by wringing his neck?!
Every best wish for 1989 and our love to you both, to whom we feel very close.
