Dear Ruth, Carl -
I do hope that you got our telegram which I sent immediately on receipt of your worrying news! Poor Ruth what a horrid ordeal for you.. how in the world do those things happen when one leads as healthy a life as do you? I do hope that you are recovering well from all the aftermaths and that the hot weather is not tiring you too much. Anyway one lovely thing about California is that the weather is always so CHEERFUL that ones spirits revive with greater ease that in Northern Europe when one is so often faced with grey and gloomy skies that ones heart fails and it takes all the character one has to pull oneself out of a severe physical shock.
I know that the wife of the Seattle conductor had a similar operation to yours some years ago and has felt a different woman since, but i was an awful shock to her at first.
This is tapped out in the frantic days of the Bath Festival rehearsals, so forgive the sloppiness both in style and typing (always need an excuse for my amateur typing anyway!) just to let you know that we would love to hear how you are getting on.
The boys are all right. We went down to see Mitta on Founder's Day at Eton and had a gruelling time which consisted for the poor old parents of three hours of sitting in 40 degrees on a river bank at night which has knocked me out since. But Mitta was so happy to see us a gave us such a lovely tea (strawberries and cream, walnut cake, brown bread, honey, tiptree jam) that we nearly cried...it must have taken all his pocket money for the rest of the term!
Do also send us news of dear George...we sent him a cable too.
Nina (Baller) and Bunny have just been up to tea and I took them over to hear the last hour of this day's rehearsal. Nina hasn't changed at all. I was vetted with the most solemn regard and, before you could count two, the sub-ject had centered on operations, doctors, diseases, etc, etc,... I was quite glad to escape to rehearsal! Bunny is much jollier and seems to be doing well for herself at school here in the country. Nina wear spectacles (which one cannot help feeling are probably entirely unnecessary) but has a lovely skin and very pretty colouring.
Carl. Listen: Mr Heilbron was told to stop Mr Pierce and read him the riot act the first time. What happened? Please TELL HIM AT ONCE TO GET IN TOUCH WITH Mr PIERCE AND STOP HIM CONTINUING TO TRESPASS. WHAT'S THE POINT OF PAYING FOR A SURVEY IF ITS CONSTANTLY INFRINGED UPON?

This brings affectionate greetings to you both
