Diana has just had to go to the dentist to replace a filling that has fallen out, and therefor I am acknowledging your sweet note about the books. Of course Diana could write much better than Cecil Beaton. I hope perhaps in a year or two that we will have sufficient peace in our lives for her to settle down to a prolonged routine of writing and reading - her favorite occupations, which unfortunately have had to be squeezed into odd moments during these hectic years.
It is sweet of your to give Carl and Ruth the $100 Christmas cheque; they have been most valiant, and it is a tragic situation. They know that they are to send me all the bills, as we have told them so by a cable and letter some months ago - I am still waiting to receive them. They are so devoted to you and would do anything for you, as you know, and your gift must have touched them deeply: at such times friends and friendship mean more than ever.
Our love to you and George and Fern, looking forward to our reunion in the New Year: we will be again on the west coast in December -
