The concept/phrase became popular after the creation of the Department of Homeland Security after 9/11. I found many examples of merchandise online with the slightly different phrase "fighting terrorism since 1492," which a few sources said was based off of Matthew K. Tafoya's (a Navajo) original T-shirt design, with his company Tribal Sovereign Tees. However, I was unable to locate an example of the 'original design' or any further information about Tafoya and his company, so I am unable to determine if this is an example of his work.
