MORNING AFTER FIRE OF 1901 - This rare photograph taken from wooden Main Street bridge looking northwest shows devastation caused by the fire of Sunday, October 13, 1901, which broke out early in the morning in the rear of a livery stable opposite the Southern Pacific depot on Front Street (now Montebello Way). All buildings on both sides of West Main Street from the bridge west to the railroad tracks were burned, as well as those some distance north on University Avenue. Left standing, center rear, is Los Gatos School on University Avenue. Some photographs of the destruction were taken from atop the school building. Girl reviewing the damage is wearing her Sunday best, a wide flowered hat and double pig tails tot he middle of her back. Stone abutments and foundations can be seen left. Photograph belonged to the late Zedd Riggs and was loaned by his brother-in-law, G.R. Burtner.Language
