Before Covid-19, mothers in the workforce were also shouldering 35 hours of unpaid domestic labor per week. Now, as schools and care facilities remain closed, they are averaging 65 hours per week on household tasks and childcare on top of their paid work. This added burden threatens to set back progress on gender equity in the workplace, a process that was stalling in recent years, even before the pandemic. This artwork is from The Carrying Stones Project, an ongoing series that combines art and data science to jump-start public conversation about women’s labor inequity.
