Church of Christ: Methodist Church (8 inches)Description
The Pinole-Hercules Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in Pinole October 1890. Meetings were held in Pinole’s schoolhouse on the city plaza. In December 1898, when the first M.E. church was built on San Pablo Avenue, near School Street, the church had its first regular pastor, the Rev. C.H. Darling. The Pinole-Hercules Methodist Episcopal Church on Valley Avenue, at the foot of School Hill, was built in 1925, when the Rev. L.D. Cook was pastor. The church was dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Downer, wife of E.M. Downer Sr., who founded the Bank of Pinole in 1905. Mrs. Downer was an ardent worker in the church for many years. This Valley Avenue church is now the home of the Church of Christ.Copyright
