ELLERHORST FAMILYDescription
In 1881, newcomers C.H. Ellerhorst bought nine acres and the family home of Kate Cousins, daughter of Dr. Samuel and Rafaela Tennent. The nine-acre Cousins Ranch was on Tennent property north of the present-day Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad. The house was remodeled in Spanish style. Frances Ellerhorst, beloved Pinole teacher and principal, was the last Ellerhorst to live in the home. She died in her late 90s in the 1970s. The home was purchased by the John McLeod family. The house is in Hercules, across the train tracks from the site of the former Santa Fe depot.
The C.H. and Christina Ellerhorst children were made up of five girls and one boy: Annie, Dora, Alice, Emma, Frances (Pansy), and Henry. His daughter, Miss Frances L. Ellerhorst began teaching at the Sheldon School in 1895 at the age of 21. She taught in Pinole schools and was the Principal for 40 years, retiring in 1950. Ellerhorst School in Pinole Valley is named after her.Copyright
