Description

METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH/CHURCH OF CHRIST: Meetings of the Pinole-Hercules Methodist Episcopal Church were held in Pinole’s schoolhouse on the city plaza when it was organized in 1890. The church built its own building on San Pablo Avenue, near School Street, in 1898, an A-frame structure that is still in use. The second Methodist Episcopal Church on Valley Avenue, a modern brick building, was built in 1925, and dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Downer, an impassioned volunteer in the church for many years and the wife of Bank of Pinole founder E.M. Downer Sr. This Valley Avenue church is now the home of the Church of Christ.
