Description

GONDOLA RESTAURANT/CLUB ALIBI: In the early 1900s, this site on the southeast corner of San Pablo and Fernandez avenues was the Charles Vincent Saloon. It was Val and Nina Pera’s Gondola Restaurant from the 1930s to the 1940s, serving drinks and Italian food. From the 1940s through the 1970s, it was the Club Alibi, run by Mike Lewis and Joe Costa; it had a bar and served Chinese and American food. The club was known for a female mannequin dressed in a blue formal seated on a toilet in the men’s room. When the door to the men’s room opened, her arm raised up with toilet paper in her hand; astonished men thought they were in the wrong restroom.
