Description

St. Joseph Church: The original, Gothic revival-style wooden Catholic church was built in 1881 on land donated by Samuel and Raphaela Tennent. The buzzing of bees that made their homes in the walls bothered parishioners; when the church was torn down and a church rectory was built on that site, thirty pounds of honey were retrieved from the wood. A new, mission-style church opened in 1951. Many of the stained-glass windows of the new St. Joseph Church are historical markers to the Portuguese influence in Pinole. The colorful “in memoriams” bear the names of Fernandez, Faria, Marcos, and Costa, as well as one gift of glass donated by the Portuguese organizations of Pinole.
