PINOLE-HERCULES SCHOOL #1: Class reunions are still held for graduates of this school, the “School on the Hill” or the “Old School,” which served the Pinole and Hercules communities for 60 years, beginning in 1906. Several of Pinole’s most-beloved teachers taught at this school, including Frances Ellerhorst, Elizabeth Stewart, and Margaret Collins, all of whom have schools named after them in the city. It was razed in 1968 to make way for the Pinole Grove Apartments, a residence for senior citizens, which incorporated some of the architectural elements of the school in its facade.
