Description

Tessie Curran Baldwin home/Garden of Gems: This home at 2235 San Pablo Avenue, originally a slaughterhouse and butcher shop, was remodeled into a residence in the 1870s for Cipriano Silvas and his wife, Maria Rosario Alvarado Silvas, who also built the Golden West Hotel on the southwest corner of Tennent and San Pablo avenues. Their daughter, Theresa, married John Curran; they reared their daughter Theresa (Tessie) at 656 Quinan Street. Tessie married Richmond Superior Court Judge Charles Baldwin and lived in Richmond most of her adult life. She inherited her grandmother’s house, and lived there the last year of her life. Lee Ann Miller and her daughter, Amber Edwards, operate the Garden of Gems in this home in 2015.
