Description

Don Ygnacio Martinez settled his family in the Pinole Valley in 1837 after receiving a grant of approximately 18,000 acres, when California was part of Mexico. He called his home Nuestra Señora de La Merced. Later it was named Rancho El Pinole. Don Ygnacio Martinez and his family were called Californios, people of Spanish-speaking heritage born in California. Fewer than 100 years later, the Martinez Adobe stood in ruins and all of Don Ygnacio’s land had been sold, much of it to Bernardo Fernandez. The land on which the Adobe stood is now Pinole Valley Park, with two soccer fields, a baseball field, a children’s play area, and two dog parks.
