1930 San Pablo and TennentDescription
SOUTH SIDE OF SAN PABLO AVENUE LOOKING EAST: Downtown Pinole in the 1920s and 1930s was the place where people ventured to do their banking, shopping, and take care of their medical needs. All of these services existed in this one block between Tennent and Fernandez Avenues, with Greenstein’s Pharmacy and Dr. Manuel Fernandez sharing space in the Downer Building (far right), the Bank of Pinole (middle) and Louis Ruff’s grocery store (the brick building on the left). On west side of the brick Downer Building was a large mural featuring the city’s slogan, “The Sun-Kissed Gem by the Bay,” painted over a background of the bay. Residential and commercial buildings replaced many historic buildings of Old Pinole. The two brick edifices were severely damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and were torn down.Copyright
