This photo shows an Amend Hay Press crew at work. Ranchers in the Pinole Valley would press hay into 250-pound bales by horse-powered presses and store them during the winter in Bernardo Fernandez’s large warehouses near San Pablo Bay. They hoped to sell the hay for a profit the following winter, as it took many tons of hay to feed the horses used by farmers and construction companies.Copyright
