Description

Pinole's first one-room school was located on the Fitzgerald Ranch along First Avenue, now Appian Way, and opened in 1866.The school was a farm building that stood until the 1950s and was used as a garage. Miss Mary Kelly taught at the school in 1884. She was the school’s first woman teacher. Manuel Fernandez, son of Bernardo Fernandez and later to be Dr. Fernandez, was a 7th grader in her class. She taught all grades from first to eighth. She was paid $65 a month. Miss M. McHarry was the teacher for the Plaza School in 1889. The post office is on this site today.
