Name/Title

Flood of 1958 #5 - Railroad Ave. bridge (Mariotti)

Description

Flood of 1958, mouth of Pinole Creek: On April 2, 1958, after several days of hard rain, high tides contributed to the overflow of Pinole Creek, which flooded the downtown area. Boats tied up along Tennent Avenue so the fire department could rescue people from their flooded homes. Boats went up and down Tennent Avenue, which was like a river. Fernandez Park was under three feet of water. Children got on the bridge connecting Valley Avenue with Prune Street in makeshift rafts and “surfed” down the creek. The flood almost wiped out the Railroad Avenue Bridge. In the 1960s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers widened, straightened, and deepened the creek. Downtown Pinole has not flooded since.
