TRANQUIL DOWNTOWN PINOLE PRIOR TO WORLD WAR I, LOOKING EAST ON SAN PABLO AVENUE: Old Pinole is transitioning to the modernizations of the new century. Horses and cars now compete for curb space. Power poles bringing electricity and telephone lines dot both sides of unpaved San Pablo Avenue. Brick and stone buildings are replacing fire-prone wooden dwellings. A fireplug sits outside O’Brian’s Corner Saloon in the right foreground. A manhole cover in the middle of the street is evidence of the town’s first 1906 sewer line. A single auto is outnumbered by horse-drawn vehicles, including the grocery delivery cart of the Pinole Central Grocery. A hitching post and horse trough stand out as time-honored symbols of vintage Pinole’s saloon culture.Made/Created
