Description

Downtown Pinole, c. 1900-1910. The Pinole-Hercules School #1 is visible at the top right, and the Downer Mansion is at the top left in the distance on the Hercules border. The school opened in 1906. The intersection in the foreground is Quinan Street and Main Street. In 1906, Edward M. Downer Sr. and other businessmen of Pinole developed the Pinole Light and Power Company. With the help of the Hercules Powder Company, electric lights were brought to Pinole. Water was supplied to the city, again with the help of the powder company. Water was piped to residents of Pinole and Hercules from a reservoir built in Pinole.
