Downer Building 1916 (8 inches) Mariotti

Description

Before 1916, fire had destroyed the wooden building next to the Bank Building erected in 1915. In 1916, Edward Downer built the two story brick building near the corner of Tennent and San Pablo Avenue. It was called the Downer Building. Upstairs were the offices of Dr. Manuel Fernandez, Pinole's beloved physician. You had to walk up a long flight of stairs. Downstairs was Jacob Greenstein's Pharmacy, later Snyder's Pharmacy in the 1950s. Also downstairs was the popular soda fountain with its suicide cokes and great barbequed beef sandwiches. It was a town gathering place. If you had no money, kind-hearted Sally the waitress would let you pay later.
