POLICE PRESS RELEASE ON SECOND FIDDLE EXPLOSION
FEBRUARY 17, 1998
Lieutenant John C. Miner
Technical Services Commander
Contributed by Adila Paraya
At approximately 9:10 a.m. there was a loud explosion that occurred at 2103 San Pablo Avenue.
It collapsed the first floor of the building where the Second Fiddle Thrift Shop is housed and allowed the 2nd story to come onto the first level.
The 2nd story houses City Community Development offices.
Fire engulfed the building and continues to burn at this time.
It was determined that EBMUD had hit a gas line with a backhoe close to the building. This, in turn, caused the explosion.
There was collateral damage to surrounding buildings, including Pinole City Hall, Pinole Public Safety Building, and the post office.
The extent of the damage is unknown at this time — what can be seen is broken glass.
At this time, all people known to be in the area at the time of the explosion are accounted for.Copyright
