Downtown Pinole, pre-1989 earthquakeDescription
SAN PABLO AVENUE LOOKING EAST: By the middle of the 20th century Pinole had a modern downtown business district. Wooden structures gave way to brick buildings that were less likely to burn down. San Pablo Avenue had been widened to allow for two traffic lanes in each direction, and many of the bars that had been a major part in much of the city’s early history were gone, giving way to restaurants and retail stores. Louis Ruff’s store (later Bill’s Liquor), and the Downer Building that housed the offices of Dr. Manuel Fernandez and Greenstein’s Pharmacy (later Snyder’s Pharmacy) and a Farmer’s insurance agency, were damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and later demolished.Copyright
