PVHS:Pinole Shopping Center panorama 1967 (Earl Combs)Description
PINOLE VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL LOOKING WEST: By 1966, construction of the Pinole Valley High School campus was nearly complete, with the outline of the football and baseball fields visible in this Earl Combs photo taken from Faria Hill. The Lee Bros. supermarket is the only development on either side of Pinole Valley Road. PVHS students are now attending classes in portable buildings (center, right), as a new campus will rise after the demolition of the old school. The hills behind the school are now filled with private homes.
PINOLE VALLEY SHOPPING CENTER: The original Pinole Valley Shopping Center, photographed here in 1968 by Earl Combs from Faria Hill, was built in stages, from the supermarket in 1959 to the in-line stores in the 1960s. It was Pinole’s first shopping destination away from the downtown area. Much of Pinole Valley Road was still undeveloped then; that would soon change, as the valley’s ranches disappeared and were replaced by private homes. Today, a completely remodeled and expanded Pinole Valley Shopping Center is a major destination, with restaurants, Walgreens, Mechanics Bank, Trader Joe’s, and specialty stores.Copyright
