The Old School bellDescription
This bell once rang for students at the Pinole-Hercules School #1. Manufactured by The C.S. Bell Co., of Hillsboro, Ohio, it is the last remnant of the school that rang generations of students to class from 1906 to 1966.
After the school was torn down in 1968, the bell was moved to Pinole Middle School, where it remained outdoors, exposed to the elements, for 39 years. When that school was remodeled in 2007-08, the bell was moved to a storage area at Collins Elementary School, then removed again to a contractor's outdoor storage yard when Collins was refurbished.
The West Contra Costa Unified School District rescued the rusted and pock-marked bell and had it sandblasted, power-coated with a satin black finish, and sealed.
The bell's 2014 installation at Collins Elementary School concluded a five-year effort by the Pinole Historical Society to have the bell refurbished and displayed for the public to enjoy.Copyright
