Description

FERNANDEZ MANSION - the last of Bernardo Fernandez's three homes. The wharf was destroyed by flood, the second by fire, and the third, built in 1894, is still standing, owned and occupied by the Dr. Joseph Mariotti family. During the 1850's Bernardo Fernandez started a mercantile business on this site. Here he built a supply store, constructed warehouses and wharves, hauled farm products and handled the mail to become very instrumental in the early establishment of this city. The "Fernandez Mansion," a California point of historical interest, marks the remnants of Pinole's birthplace and shall be preserved in perpetuity. Dedicated 1976. Bernardo Fernandez, born in Oporto, Portugal, arrived in San Francisco Bay in August 1853. He subsequently settled on 43 acres of land in Pinole. He traded, bought grain, and obtained local crops to sell in San Francisco. He built five storage warehouses. By 1894, he had acquired more than 3,000 acres of land in Pinole, Martinez, Oakland, and San Francisco. In 1859, Fernandez married Charlotte (Carlotta) Cuadra. The first and second homes they built were destroyed by fire and flood, respectively. A third home of 22 rooms, built in 1894, still stands at the foot of Tennent Avenue and the waterfront. It is the home of the Dr, Joseph Mariotti family, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
