Main Street 1920s #2 (Fernandez)Description
SAN PABLO AVENUE LOOKING EAST FROM THE FARIA HOUSE: There was not much traffic on San Pablo Avenue going east in the 1930s through downtown Pinole toward Hercules. The speed limit was 20 miles per hour, strictly enforced by motorcycle officer Lon Buck. The former Golden West Hotel on the southwest corner of San Pablo and Tennent Avenues was now the Joe Lunghi Trovatore Café, with the Downer Mansion seen above the café’s large sign. Several gas stations and restaurants made Pinole a popular stop for residents and commuters. Downtown Pinole today looks much different, save for the Downer Mansion, Antlers Tavern, and the Bank of Pinole building.Copyright
