Pinole grew from a bucket-brigade fire department in 1900 to a staff of full time professional firefighters. The old fire station on Plum Street, built by volunteers with lumber from a torn-down school, gave way to the Pinole Public Safety Facility, which houses the fire and police departments. The Hercules Powder Company put in a well and pumping station in Pinole in 1904. Fire protection in the newly incorporated city consisted of six fire hydrants, two hose carts, and 500 feet of hose. The carts were pushed to a fire, where volunteers connected the hose to a hydrant. In 1959, Chief Wallace “Pepper” Martin (Pinole’s sixth chief) became the city’s first full-time paid fireman.Made/Created
