Description

A pair of six-color silkscreen prints on bleached white linen depicting a country man and a country woman, each pictured with tools of daily work on a early American farm. Country Man 262 print: A man in overalls and a work shirt stands behind a split rail fence holding a pitch fork in one hand and jug in the other. A shock of wheat, a rooster and a hen are at his feet. Above his head is a sickle, an oxen yoke and a horse weathervane. Across the yoke is a paraphrased quote from Daniel Webster, “WHERE TILLAGE BEGINS ARTS FOLLOW”. Country Woman 263 print: Based on the position of the wrought iron andirons and the protruding brick hearth, the viewer is inside the fireplace watching the woman work. She is about to pour cream into a slipware butter churn decorated with a line drawing of a cow with horns. A wrought iron bread peel stands against the chair, suggesting bread is baking and will be ready for the fresh made butter. Behind her is a tall, narrow spice box, two wall mounted shelves, and a framed maxim from Poor Richard’s Almanac, “Grace thy house let it not grace thee”. Following Poor Richard’s advice, the valances on the two shelves demonstrate thrift, as they match the fabrics in the woman’s dress and calico apron. This pair of prints was also produced as wallhangings; see images.
