1914-1918 Canadian Army Pay Corps Captain's service dress cap made of tan khaki wool. The top is flattened and has a front peak made of the same wool. A chinstrap (31.5 cm), made adjustable with two brass buckles (1 x 1.1 cm), is attached to the cap with two general list buttons (1.4 cm diameter) on either side of the cap. The cap badge denotes the Canadian Army Pay Corps. It is made of browning copper and includes a beaver, maple leaves, and the King's Crown (4 x 5 cm).
The lining is made of a beige silk twill and is quilted in a circular pattern around the manufacturer's stamp. The sweatband is made of brown leather. Sewn into the forehead is a bunched strip of cloth; likely a brow pad or to give some stiffening to the front of the cap.Context
Created in 1907, the Canadian Army Pay Corps (CAPC) sailed to England in October 1914. It was responsible for issuing payments to the CEF. Members included a Chief Paymaster, Command Paymaster, and Paymaster, Canadian troops in France, with six field cashiers. In 1917, all Paymasters and Pay Sargeants, Canadian soldiers from other units, were transferred to the CAPC. Members also served in Serbia in 1919.Inscription/Signature/Marks
