Context

The Fort Garry Horse Battalion was organized and raised in Winnipeg in August 1914. It was sent to Valcartier on 6 August and sailed for England on 3 October. FGH was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel R.W. Patterson. Its members included 40 officers and 1,115 other ranks. Upon its arrival in England, FGH was reformed as the Canadian Cavalry Depot. On 21 January 1916, the unit created the Fort Garry Horse of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade. It fought at Guyencourt, Saulcourt, Cambrai, Moreuil Wood, and the Last Hundred Days. FGH disbanded on 15 September 1920.
