6 1/2 X 8 1/2 inch black/white photograph "British dead at Spion KOP, 26 Jan 1900." Detail shows British Infantry dead from rifle fire on the hill of Spion Kop, 23-24 Jan 1900. The British dead are dressed in standard infantry uniforms: service dress tunics, trousers, puttees, boots. Tropical issue helmets are on the ground.

Context

Spion Kop in Natal Province attacked and taken by British Infantry 23 Jan 1900. Next day, they were fired on by Boer Soldiers above Spion Kop. 1200 British Soldiers killed, wounded, captured worst British defeat since 1853-1856 Crimean War.
