Description

Family register of Chandler and Delight Perry worked by Catharine Perry. Ink and watercolor on paper with a polychrome floral border along two sides and the top, with a rural scene with a river in the center at the bottom. The lettering that spells out "Genealogy" and "Progeny" mimics the working of queen stitch in embroidery. The balance of the text is a more standard form of script.

Cultural/Historical Context

Catharine, the daughter of Sally Perry’s brother, Chandler Perry, and his wife, Delight Morse, of Waterford, Maine, painted a family register. (A sampler from Sally Perry's school comes earlier in this section of the exhibition.) Catharine's register includes a mimicking of queen stitch to spell out the title, “Genealogy” at the top, the word “Married” underlined, and the use of the word “Progeny” prior to the naming of the offspring. It was probably created in the early 1830s; although it includes two dates from the early 1840s, they seem to have been added later. Catharine appeared on the U.S. Federal Census, living with her parents, through 1860. She died in 1863 and is buried in Elm Vale Cemetery in Waterford with her parents, who passed away in 1871.
