Plate 65 from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing North Union Elder James S. Prescott with four men, described as visitors, looking at cows on the banks of Lower Lake.
Baus description: "At the right Elder James S. Prescott shows a visitor the beautiful scenes at the lower pond, which he helped to build in 1836-7. Elder Prescott being a stone mason, laid the foundation of the Center Family house in 1826, and joined the colony the same year. He was well educated and formerly acted as a missionary and teacher among the indians. He served as elder from 1827 at various times and taught school. He was trustee for 40 yrs., and it was his manuscipts [sic] until 1870, that furnishes us the history of the Shaker to that time. He died April. 3-1888, a year before the end of the colony; age 85. Thus he served almost 62 yrs. of the 67 years the colony existed."Photograph Details
