Plate 62 from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing the flour mill (gristmill) on the old sawmill foundation at Lower Lake. Photo is identical to Plate 710 but has a different caption, description, and date.
Baus description: "In 1886 the Shakers moved another building that they had, on to the old sawmill foundation, and removed the machinery from the stone gristmill that was later blown up, into this frame building. It was leased by the Society to Walter Dyke, who for a time also operated the old stone mill. Mr. Dyke died in 1890, and Thomas R. Skove bought the lease from Mrs. Dyke. The lease from the Shaker trustees, Watson Andrews and Jos. Slingerland called for a rental of $400 per year for the use of the mill and a dwelling house nearby. Mr. Skove operated the mill for two years, and when the Shaker property was sold it remained idle for about a year. In 1893 Mr. Skove bought the mill and moved it intact to a point of land near Woodland + Ingersoll Rd. Again the foundation remained, and in 1897 the old mill was torn down, and the lumber still in fine condition was used to build a home, which Mr. Skove occupied for more than 15 years."
