Plate 61 from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing the sawmill ruins at Lower Lake.
Baus description: "The stone foundation still remaining between Coventry Rd. and the lower lake, now the Shaker Wild Flower Preserve, was used for supporting the old sawmill, built in 1837.
The mill was of frame 21 x 34 ft. and two stories high. The upper story was the cooper shop, where tubs, pails and churns were made from pine, shipped from Michigan, from land owned by the Society. The lower floor was the saw mill proper. In 1885 a mysterious fire consumed most of the buildings of the Mill Family and the old foundation was all that remained of the saw mill."
