Shakers, 1830sDescription
Lithograph by an anonymous printer/artist, c.1830s, featuring Shaker sisters and brothers dancing with a non-Shaker woman watching the dance in the bottom right corner. Hats and cloaks are hanging on the walls behind the Shakers. Black Shakers are visible inContext
This was such a popular image when it was first published that at least eighteen different versions of the same scene were issued, each printed in sizeable editions. They all derived from the same source—a sketch made from life, dating from around 1830, by an unknown visitor to a Shaker meeting in New Lebanon, New York. Notable features of this work are the inclusion of black Shakers, the presence of non-Shakers viewing their “mode of worship,” and the almost cartoon-like, exaggerated treatment of the Shakers.Location
