Plate 52 from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing a southwest view of the stone gristmill in Doan Brook Gorge.
Baus description: "In 1843 a new grist mill, the only stone building in the colony, was built near the stone quarry on the north side of the creek. On the south end it was four stories high. The massive walls of the basement story was four feet thick. It was a monument of solid masonry and workmanship, and was pronounced the finest in Ohio. It was sold and on July 4-1886, it was blown up by the owner, Chas. Reader. With a little forethought, what a wonderful monument this fine building would have made if left standing and fitted out as a museum of the old Shaker relics and handywork [sic]."Photograph Details
