Description

Gouache on board triptych study by Hungarian-American painters Andrew Karoly (Andor Karoly) and Louis Szanto (Lajos Szántó) from around 1957 for a commissioned mural designed for the Van Aken branch of the Society National Bank. The left panel is titled "The Ritual Dance of the Shakers" and depicts Shakers dancing with chairs hanging on a peg rail in the background. The center panel is titled "The Shakers Harvesting Their Famous Herbs" and depicts Shaker sisters harvesting herbs in baskets while Shaker brothers farm in the background. The right panel is titled "Life of the Diligent Shaker Sect" and depicts Shaker sisters and one Shaker brother in an arched doorway that closely resembles the South Family house in New Lebanon, New York.
