Description

North Union Shaker gravestone inscribed with the initials “C. R.”

Context

The Shakers maintained separation between genders in life and death, with women buried on the north side and men buried on the south side. Stones were simple and marked only with the deceased's initials. This particular stone with the initials "C. R." could have belonged to Clarissa Risley, Caroline Russell, Chester Risley, or Candace Russell, all of whom were buried in the Shaker cemetery.
