Plate 27 from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing an east view of Center Family girls' house along Lee Road.
Baus description: "On the west side of Lee Rd., and a little south of the Middle family house stood the girls house, almost across the street from the meeting house.
This was the home of the girls, where they were taught all kinds of handy work and all had their various tasks to do. They attended school at the brick school house, south of the meeting house. The boys had a home south of the office. Views from Lee Rd. showing east side. (front).
At first the children were kept at the East family, and later removed to the Middle family village, where each sex was under an immediate charge of a keeper. No child under ten was taken in unless accompanied by its father or mother or both.
The building was torn down between 1905 and 1908, when all remaining buildings were razed."Photograph Details
