Description

Plate 23 from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing the interior, looking north, of the Center Family meeting house along Lee Road. Baus description: "Interior of meeting house, from the public seats on the south side. Of cource [sic] there are no pews, as the 50 ft of floor space was needed for their ceremony. Wooden benches surround the walls, and above these a row of wooden pegs to hang up their hats and coats. On the north side is seen the center door, from the hall, by which the worshipers enter, and on either side of this, the doors leading to the appartments [sic] of the ministry. Here public meetings were held at 10:30 A.M. every Sunday from the first of May to September. Their exercises consisted in singing, marching and sometimes in dancing, according to the movement of the Spirit. The elders did most of the reading and speaking, although others of either sex, were not prohibited when impressed by the spirit. On Wed. and Thurs. nights they held family worship at the home. On other occasions they met at the meeting house and marched to the Holy Grove, between the middle and East families, and in the wood worshipped God in His first temple."
